"The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up" is both real and powerful
Back in 2014, a very charming little book was published titled “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up” by a Japanese woman named Marie Kondo.
Little did we know how this little book would massively change our lives for the better.
Marie Kondo is a professional tidying consultant, which sounds a bit strange at first, but the results she obtains with her clients is nothing short of amazing. She not only helps them to tidy their homes, but she also helps them to transform their lives - everything from losing weight to starting their own business to improving their marriage.
It sounds weird, but just as a doctor diagnoses you based on the symptoms you present with, so can we understand ourselves by looking at our homes.
Take a look at your home. What do you see? And more importantly, what do you really want your home to look like?
Do you want it to feel warm and cozy and inviting?
Do you want it to feel like it is clean and organized and immaculate?
Do you want it to feel sophisticated and elegantly decorated and well thought out?
Here’s the thing: If you want it to feel warm and cozy and inviting, then you have to be warm and cozy and inviting. If it doesn’t feel that way, then the problem isn’t your home - it’s you.
I don’t mean for that to be harsh. But the same way that your appearance is an extension of your mind, so is your home an extension of your mind as well. If you are a warm and inviting person, it will display itself in your home
If you are clean and organized, it should show in your home.
If you are sophisticated and elegant, it should also show in your home as well.
We are interconnected so closely with our homes and our belongings. It’s something that hasn’t really been well researched or discussed, simply because it sounds silly to most people.
That’s why the life changing magic of tidying up is so powerful. We could try and change your mentality, but that gets into a whole set of other issues and a lot of hours of therapy.
What if instead, you were able to affect change - by changing your home and the objects you surround yourself with?
If we affect our environment by our personality, then is the reverse true? Can we affect ourselves and our lives by transforming our environment?
In short, yes - that is the transformative effect of the KonMari Method™.
By changing your environment, you affect yourself in a positive way. That’s why we go on a relaxing tropical vacation - you change your surroundings and you change your state of mind. If you go to a luxurious quiet hotel in the Caribbean, you will feel relaxed and luxurious - a totally different person than the stressed and harried person you normally are. You almost don’t have a choice but to relax and be happy when you’re surrounded by tropical sun, the beach, and bottomless pina coladas, right?
In the same way, if you want yourself to be clean and organized, you make your home clean and organized and then your mind has no choice but to follow suit!
After Kee-ju and I completed her process, we found a lot of good things happened as a result. Amazing, powerful, indeed magical things happened. It's because of this that we believe in the Marie Kondo way of life.
Over the next couple days, Kee-ju and I will be going a bit more into depth regarding how the KonMari Method™ helped to change our life and how it can help you. I know it sounds a little bit weird, but I truly think that this is one thing that most people can see a truly positive result from doing.
If you've done the KonMari Method™ , read Marie Kondo's books, or have any questions, please feel free to let us know in the comments below! Check back here tomorrow for my next piece on the connection between our homes and ourselves.
